Why is there a gap between these buildings in Great Titchfield Street?
On the right is the side of Audley House which spreads along the adjoined Margaret Street. It was designed by John William Simpson and Maxwell Ayrton (who would notably go on to design the wonderful old Wembley Stadium) and built in 1907.
On the left is Great Titchfield House, built in 1925 to the design of John Alan Slater and Arthur Hamilton Moberly, whose offices were round the corner in Berners Street.
The buildings are separated by a low one storey gate. Why didn’t Slater & Moberly build up to the edge of Audley House? Why leave the unused space? Who knows?
What they have done is create a space for the lovely Victorian Gothic tower of All Saints Church to peek through at what is going on in this corner of Fitzrovia.
