To Stockwell, and while I was looking for Van Gogh’s house on Hackford Road I came across this place. The Type Archive.

The Archive holds various collections of type and print related artefacts in warehouses in Vincent’s Yard and has a brief to make them available to the public. Their first exhibition is being held in theĀ  room at the top of the steps in the building you can see below. It celebrates the work of Berthold Wolpe who designed at least five major fonts.

It was a small but interesting exhibition which I enjoyed and learned several things about the print business. My favourite new fact is that printers would buy a new font in a case that opened into two parts. The top part of the case held the capital letters and was known as the upper case, and the bottom part containing the ordinary versions of the letters was the lower case.
