small thoughts from the big city

About theLONDONi

As you can see we’ve got the builders in at the moment. It’s very early days for theLONDONi. We’ll be posting blog entries and developing the site over the next few days and weeks so please do pop back to check on our progress and hopefully find something of interest to read. NB We haven’t finished all the credits on pictures, but we will soon.

We love this city. Its way too big for one person to understand completely. We are interested in how London is seen, experienced and portrayed by people in real life and in the arts.

The image of Nelson’s Column on the sidebar to the left is ©David Ball Restoration (London) Ltd and is used with kind permission. David Ball Restoration Limited restored Nelson’s Column to its current superb state during 2006. They published the story of the restoration on this website. It is a fascinating account of a once in a lifetime project.

Interesting snippets of information include project facts, written by Adrian Attwood, like this one:

Over the period of the project each tradesman would have climbed the equivalent of Everest. No wonder I feel so knackered and have worn out a pair of sturdy safety boots in the process. PS my wife really likes my new physique. How do I keep it going. Please give me another tall building to restore otherwise the treadmill at the gym beckons – not as interesting.
